A forward-thinking power-system viewpoint on the increased integration of distributed generation into the grid

Alternative, renewable sources of energy are often referred to as "distributed generation" (DG). The electric power system plays an essential role in transporting and allowing the use of this energy, and much controversy surrounds the question of the true hosting capacity of the grid when it comes to DG. This book introduces systematic and transparent methods for quantifying the effect of DG on the power system, either at a specific grid location or in the grid as a whole. It shows how to calculate—and increase—the hosting capacity for different types of networks and various types of DG, with emphasis on wind power, solar power, and combined heat and power.

This book is the first to explain the background of the "hosting capacity approach"—using the existing power system as a starting point and considering how DG changes the performance of the system when no additional measures are taken—and to provide numerous examples. The heart of the book outlines the problems surrounding the integration of DG in detail: increased risk of overload and increased losses; increased risk of overvoltages; increased levels of power-quality disturbances; incorrect operation of the protection; and the impact on power-system stability and operation. Specific solutions are discussed, ranging from building more lines and using power-electronics control to smart grids and microgrids. Theoretical models and research results are also presented.

This is also the first book to go into detail on both the "shallow" and "deep" impact of DG; it describes the impact of small generation on the distribution system and on the operation of the transmission system. Emphasizing that the introduction of DG should not result in unacceptable performance of the power grid, the authors discuss several improvements that could be made in the network, on either the production or consumption side, to enable this.

Integration of Distributed Generation in the Power System is an important resource for engineers and researchers working on power systems and the connection/integration of DG to the power system; equipment manufacturers; wind-power developers; government regulators; and undergraduate and postgraduate students in the power engineering and energy fields.

About the Author
Samuel DeWitt Proctor, Th.D. is Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University and the Pastor Emeritus of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. He earned a doctorate in theology at Boston University, became president of two colleges -- Virginia Union, his Alma Mater and North Carolina A&T -- and served as associate director of the Peace Corps under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. He was also a speechwriter for Hubert Humphrey's presidential campaign of 1968, was Associate General Secretary of the National Council of Churches, and headed up the Institute for Services to Education. Ultimately he served as Lyman Beecher Lecturer at Yale in 1990, professor at Vanderbilt University, United Theological Seminary, and Duke University. He lives in New Jersey.

Information in this book is really good, in this audiobook. But as audiobooks go this is incredibly boring to listen to. You're literally listening to someone read off of paper. He reads fast. His examples are unmemorable. And. He gives one quick example for each point and then quickly moves onto the next point. Again the information is really good but it's incredibly hard to focus on an audiobook that is mother told, quickly read, with poor samples and no stories to highlight The points he's trying to make.

This book outlines some really good techniques for telling for a person is lying, withholding information or determining a persons true level of interest. It goes beyond mere body language and in fact doesn't even cover those theories.It describes specific scenarios and explains the way you can apply these techniques. If you'd like to discover if a person is really interesed in a job postion for instance. You first gauge their level of confidence and then by way of testing figure out if that person has more than a minimal level of interest. If they are really interested then they will become stressed when they see their chances for getting what they want are diminished. That makes sense though of course those reactions can be imitated by someone intending to mislead.This book is good for employers or anyone who has to interact with persons whose true motivations are not easily determined. I have several books on body language and although those theories often hold true and are observable and repeatable this book is different.

I got this in audio CD. I am in traffic and I feel like he is sitting next to me and telling me this. I also own the book and have read it 5 times.

I have to admit that if this line wasn't in the book, I would have likely rated this book lower:"Does this mean you will be able to read anyone with perfect precision, every time? No. The system is not 100 percent foolproof. However, you will gain a definitive statistical advantage in every encounter."The theory mentioned in this text is sound, but without a good grasp of the context of a situation, the information here is useless. It's important to understand how someone is, the experiences that affect them, and the context of the situation (formal vs. informal for example) so that reactions can be gauged properly.Another warning about this book: Some of the examples are unclear without a conceptualization of the context, and without a firm grasp of the concept being discussed. It's not unusual to need to reread sections of the book and (to an extreme) ask questions.As far as who I would recommend this book for... Although the title of the book makes it sound ideal for everybody, it really takes both intelligence and a good character to apply the techniques properly and accurately. When I say good character, I mean someone who is good at avoiding the pitfalls of human nature, such as egotism. Keep in mind that this book is based on Psychological principles, some of which we ourselves are subject to and that can intefere with our ability to use the methods defined here effectively.

Even if you can't picture yourself in the situations he describes you walk away with an awareness of human nature; what liars say/do...etc. It's one book you'll reread and gain something every time you pick it up.Not a generic 'feel good' book but exactly how it's described. Try it.

A bit too technical for me, but for someone in business or law enforcement it would be a great book. I believe I learned many good things even if I think it's a bit over my head.

This book has some wonderful insight to it. I would consider this a quick read. The projections are good as well as the flow and techniques provided.As with any book don't expect this to be the end all be all but is great for getting your feet wet.

I enjoyed this book. Thought it had some useful tidbits, but I wouldn't say that it could be easily applied in every situation. I think you'd have to practice and know your "audience", before applying some of his logic.After reading this book, I know I've had someone apply one of these principles to me at one time. I'm a fairly open person and I wish they would've come right out and asked me instead of me "reading them" and what they were trying to get at. Of course, not everyone is as open, so these tips may help in discovering another person.

About the Author
Born in the country near Stafford, England, Pete Cooper began playing the violin at the age of 9 and went on to study English at Belliol College, Oxford. He began his professional career as a fiddler and singer in 1978, performing in Britain, Europe, and the USA first with Appalachian dulcimer player, Holly Tannen, then with traditional singer, Peta Webb. Since the mid 1980s, Peter has concentrated his musical efforts on the study and teaching of folk fiddle styles. His first solo album, All Around the World (1990), released on his own label, Fiddling From Scratch, featured music from Ireland, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and the USA. His 1993 album, The Wounded Hussar, explores the rich diversity of the Irish tradition and includes many of the tunes in this book The Complete Irish Fiddle Player. Pete currently teaches in London and reviews for Musical Traditions and Folk Roots magazines. He has composed music for film and, in addition to solo gigs, performs with a group called Vivando whose 1995 release by the same name includes some of his own compositions.

I had the pleasure of briefly meeting Jennifer in Amish country in Ohio. The short conversation we had was a conversation I will never forget. After reading "Picking Cotton" I am so blessed to have had this brief meeting with such an intelligent, strong and overall amazing woman. I can only imagine how interesting a conversation would be with Mr. Cotton. I learned so much from reading this book. Obviously no one is perfect. To actually read the accounts of two people who were able to see beyond the horrible negative history they shared and become advocates for others and ultimately best of friends is a lesson for one and all! When I met and spoke briefly with Jennifer, as we both took a break from photographing the beautiful Ohio countryside, I left her with one statement. After reading this book, I would like to include Mr. Cotton in my statement as well. Jennifer and Mr. Cotton, thank you for sharing your incredible story. "I truly believe this world would be a much better place with more people like you in it"!Do not just read this book. Learn, ingest and spread the word!

A total must read! This was the first North Carolina Exoneration and it’s so important that this story was told. After being raped at knifepoint, Jennifer did her best to memorize the features of her attacker. Unfortunately she identified Ronald cotton, who was not her attacker. This did not come to light until 11 years later. Jennifer and Ronald went on to become friends and do speaking engagements to emphasize the importance of real physical evidence and how untrustworthy eyewitness testimony.It’s a truly thrilling and chilling read, especially as it is completely true!

This moving true story of the North Carolina rape and false identification of the wrong suspect brings hope that the criminal justice system can finally work. Mr. Cotton's forgiveness is a quality we should all emulate. Spending nearly 12 years in prison during the prime of his life for a crime he did not commit, would harden most individuals. North Carolina's Innocence Project is also a model for other states. I'm so glad something good came after the OJ Simpson case with DNA testing. Though many mistakes are highlighted in the book that the criminal justice system originally failed to take into account, it seems that they have made amends to both Mr. Cotton and making adjustments include double blind witness and law enforcement identification. Cross racial misidentification research and DNA testing can help by investigating former cases and appeals and getting falsely accused people removed from jail and putting the correct person behind bars. North Carolina should be applauded for this and other states follow through with similar programs and reforms.The friendship that develops between the two families is also heart warming. Going from the words and story of the rape victim and then to the words and story of Mr. Cotton through prosecution and incarceration and final release is truly an effective tool to feel the pain both experienced and the friendship that later develop as they tell their stories throughout this country and abroad. A quick but powerful read.

Perfect read for aspiring psychologists. However, would recommend to anyone. Regardless of their career and other interests. This is a fairly easy read and very detailed. I finished the book in two days. I couldn't put down my Kindle. Be forewarned though, it is a lot of reading and a lot to remember. Don't be alarmed if you have to revisit a chapter because you can't remember who a certain character is or if you have to re-read a page. This book does jump around a lot. In one chapter you might be in one year, but the next you've skipped ahead a few years or so. Also be prepared to look up legal terms. There is a section in which there is a trial and the lawyers are in a heated argument with the judge. In that section a bunch of legal jargon is thrown at the reader. Other than that, this book is worth the read, worth the buy, and will tug at your heart strings. I was sad to finish it. It's an incredible read, one of my favorites. I am very glad I purchased it. I know I will be re reading it soon and it will very likely be just as good the second time. I hope my own novel will be this good.

I met Ronald not too long ago in a store parking lot where he was helping a friend. A more charming and eloquent and intelligent person than you commonly expect to find, as he was watching/guarding a running auto while the owner was inside shopping. :)This seriously is an excellent book.. you will find this man who was unjustly incarcerated and didn't not "harden" in prison but rather discovered that he could be an advocate for others. I applaud Ronald Cotton and This Book.

In this true story, a case of mistaken identity sent an innocent man to prison for life. Fortunately, he was exonerated and received the governor's pardon of innocence, but only after serving eleven years behind bars. The remarkable part --the heart-- of this story is that Ronald Cotton forgave his accuser, Jennifer Thompson, who had picked him out of a lineup, insisting he was the man who had brutally raped her. Her mistake was understandable, because Cotton and the actual rapist, Bobby Poole, were virtual lookalikes. DNA testing, which wasn't widely available at the time of Cotton's incarceration, provided the proof that finally freed him. Amazingly, he and Thompson, who was deeply remorseful, became friends. Together, they are now advocates for "The Innocence Project," a nonprofit organization that works to free the innocent through DNA testing. CBS's 60 Minutes reported this story in 2009, the year the book was released as a hardcover. A softcover, with photos, is the one I have. Ronald Cotton's ability to forgive Jennifer Thompson for those eleven lost years is truly inspiring.
